Fitzroy Primary School is committed to providing an environment where students are safe and feel safe. We have a zero tolerance for child abuse and are committed to protecting children from harm.

To create and maintain a child safe organisation Fitzroy Primary School will be implementing, each of the standards as below:

Culturally Safe Environments – Establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.

Leadership, Governance and Culture – Ensure that child safety and wellbeing are embedded in school leadership, governance and culture.

Child & Student Empowerment – Children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.

Family Engagement – Families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.

Diversity & Equity – Equity is upheld and diverse needs are respected in policy and practice.

Suitable Staff & Volunteers – People working with children and young people are suitable and supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.

Child-Focused Complaints Processes – Ensure that processes for complaints and concerns are child focused.

Child Safety Knowledge, Skills & Awareness – Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.

Physical & Online Environments – Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing while minimising the opportunity for children and young people to be harmed.

Review of Child Safety Practices – Implementation of the Child Safe Standards is regularly reviewed and improved.

Implementation of Child Safety Practices – Policies and procedures that document how schools are safe for children, young people and students.

Below is a snapshot of ways Fitzroy Primary School have in the past, are currently and will in to the future, embed the Child Safety Standards:

  • Development and implementation of a Child Safety Policy.
  • Zero tolerance of Child abuse.
  • School Values and Rights and Responsibilities that guide the school.
  • An effective Student Engagement & Well Being Policy.
  • Promotion of standards via newsletter and website.
  • Provide and deliver an engaging curriculum.
  • Have clearly defined roles within the school.
  • Provide supervision of students (from 8:45am – 3:45pm).
  • Planning across the school.
  • Procedures for first aid, mandatory reporting, etc.
  • Behaviour expectations from the staff, students and families.
  • Effective review practices of programs and policies.
  • The school will support or assist children and families who disclose on a case by case issue.
  • When advertising a job that has child-connected work, the jobs requirements, duties and responsibilities include Child Safety and essential qualifications, experience and attributes to Child Safety. DET recruitment online will implement this.
  • Induction process outlines Child Safety practices including Code of Conduct.
  • The school makes reasonable efforts to gather, verify and record information about a person whom it proposes to engage to perform child-connected work (Working with Children Check, Police Check etc).
  • Appropriate Supervision of the above mentioned is in place.
  • School Council endorsed policies related to Fitzroy Primary School’s commitment to Child Safety.
